The Crucial Role of Professional Certifications in the Data Center Industry

Francisco Sales •

The data center industry has experienced significant growth due to high demand for data-driven applications. A study by Mordor Intelligence indicates that the Latin America Data Center Construction sector is anticipated to register a CAGR of 7.52% between 2023 to 2028 This has generated a critical need for highly skilled and certified professionals for a variety of roles that enable data centers to run reliably.

According to a 2021 study by Uptime Institute Intelligence, it was anticipated that the number of employees needed to staff data centers in Latin America would increase by approximately 21,000 between 2019 and 2025. This poses a significant challenge for the industry. The report also highlighted a global issue: in 2020, half of the data center owners or operators worldwide were facing difficulties in finding candidates with the necessary qualifications. Uptime Institute doesn't foresee substantial relief in this regard until at least 2025, when the adoption of new technologies might begin to alleviate the staffing challenges.

The report explains that over 230 specialist job roles for different types and sizes of data centers are being required to plan, design, build, and operate this infrastructure.

To best prepare data centers for success and efficiency, skill certifications for data center professionals are increasingly important in the industry. Many vendors and organizations providing training to educate data center employees, from starting specialists to industry executives. Depending on their roles, industry professionals need strong skills in design, operations, control, monitoring, service, and construction, as well as a deep knowledge of the resources required to enable that the data center operates uninterrupted, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Certifications

Vertiv experts have identified three primary focus areas for certifications, namely Management, Energy Efficiency and Carbon Reduction, and Operation and Maintenance. The objective is to provide comprehensive training that spans the entire lifecycle of a data center.

  • Management: These certifications cover topics from logistics to the essential employees required for smooth operation. Proper training enables reliable equipment installation, reducing downtime risks and establishing a strong foundation for the data center's stability from the outset.
  • Energy Efficiency and Carbon Reduction: This training provides insights into data center energy efficiency and carbon emissions through responsible practices in battery and power system management, as well as optimization of resource utilization, cooling efficiency, and power distribution, leading to energy savings and cost reduction.
  • Operation and Maintenance: These courses focus on uninterrupted data center operations. Well-trained personnel can quickly troubleshoot and respond to issues during operation, improving availability. They also review the value of real-time data analysis for proactive issue identification and preventive maintenance. This comprehensive approach enhances overall data center performance, minimizes downtime, and promotes continuous operations.
