How to guarantee more sustainable and responsible data centers in Latin America?

Gustavo Pérez •

This year sustainability became an increasingly crucial issue for the data center industry in Latin America. As hyperscale data center operators are making public commitments on sustainability, they are adding pressure to have more efficient and cleaner operation, regardless of energy consumption.

“Data centers are being driven by customers to reduce their carbon footprint, energy consumption, water use, raw materials, and the amount of waste they produce,” cites a report by the firm Norton Rose Fulbright. The trend has been set: the future of data centers is “green”.

Vertiv designs and builds future-ready digital infrastructures with the goal of helping customers increase their energy efficiency and reliability. For this reason, during its participation in the DCD>Connect Cancun, on September 19 and 20, the company focused the conversation on the importance of contributing to a more responsible future for the data center industry.

Rafael Garrido, Vice President of Vertiv LATAM and Country Manager for Vertiv Brazil, joined Alessandro Lombardi, CEO of Grupo Peimote Holding, and Marcos Peigo, Senior Advisor, Digital Bridge & Co-Founder & CEO of Scala Data Centers, in the panel "How to create a responsible and sustainable future in the Data Center sector?" to analyze the sustainability approach being taken by the industry in the region, and the demands on hyperscalers in terms of design and technology to reduce resource consumption.

According to Norton Rose Fulbright, these demands are related to more transparent and quantifiable metrics that enhance the future responsibility of the operation, such as Power Usage Efficiency (PUE), Carbon Usage Effectiveness (CUE), Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE), and Efficiency in the Use of Infrastructure (IUE).

In an effort to work with its customers to support their sustainability goals, including those measured by the above metrics, in its inaugural environmental, social and governance (ESG) report, Vertiv establishes five key principles to meet when developing and delivering high-performing products and solutions:

  • High efficiency: Design energy and water-efficient solutions for the market.
  • High reliability: Build resilient and highly serviceable equipment that’s durable and long lasting.
  • Low impact: Strive to understand and limit manufacturing processes that may have adverse environmental impacts, and measure and increase use of recycled materials in our products and product packaging.
  • Low touch: Enable remote troubleshooting, optimization services, and more connected systems to improve and reduce environmental impact of maintenance practices.
  • Circular economy: Reuse, refurbish, or recycle end-of-life equipment and materials.

To recognize the innovation and commitment of the industry to reduce the environmental impact of data centers Vertiv also served as sponsor of the Environmental Impact category at the DCD Latam Awards this year.
