This Earth Day, we are happy to remind our industry and customers of the critical role data centers have played in driving the digital transformation and innovation that defines our modern lives, as well as the importance of developing strategies for their sustainable growth and striving to limit their environmental impact.
At Vertiv, we recognize the intersection of technology and energy efficiency. With data centers reported to consume 1.5% of global energy, a figure that could double with broad AI adoption, environmental responsibility is becoming increasingly critical. Our One Vertiv, One World plan guides our efforts to develop and implement solutions that improve energy efficiency in data centers, reducing environmental impact across our operations and products. Why data centers matter
Data centers are the foundation that powers the digital world. Virtually every digital interaction we have — whether it's a video call, using a chatbot, or even asking AI a question — depends on a critical data center infrastructure that makes all the new requirements work.
It is estimated that the construction of data centers in Latin America will reach $7.81 billion in 2029, with a compound annual growth rate of more than 8.71%. This, along with the rise of AI, means that modern data centers are needed, and their energy efficiency, operability and ability to adapt to the future will determine long-term success.
Responsible operations
Vertiv strives to implement continuous enhancements and improvement initiatives in our own facilities and operational efficiencies. Leveraging the Vertiv Operating System (VOS), we aim to enhance resource utilization, maintain safety standards, and reduce waste in our production processes.
We have set specific targets for environmental footprint and improving resource and energy efficiency in data centers. We track our progress by regularly monitoring key metrics, such as carbon emissions, energy usage, water consumption, waste generation, recycling rates, safety protocols, and environmental management systems.
Under the One Vertiv, One World plan, we focus on delivering energy efficient products and systems that also reduce carbon emissions, climate impact, and waste.
Other means to provide measurable impact: The Treedom Vertiv Forest and STEM education
There are many ways that companies, including data center operators and manufacturers, can help to offset carbon emissions and give back to our communities. Vertiv promotes initiatives such as the Treedom Vertiv Forest, a global reforestation effort that supports tree planting across multiple regions in an engaging and accessible way. To date, the Vertiv community has planted 5,186 trees through the Treedom Vertiv Forest initiative, spanning 12 countries in four continents, covering 12 hectares of land. These trees are projected to absorb CO₂ over their lifetime, contributing to global carbon capture efforts. Through Treedom, individuals can plant trees remotely, directly supporting reforestation projects and promoting biodiversity in a more accessible way. Vertiv is also proud to support education and employment opportunities in our industry.
We have multiple programs to support STEM education, from K-12 engagements, university internships, and apprenticeship programs designed to engage and introduce our industry to a new generation of diverse careers that support data centers and digital computers.
