Vertiv Introduces Industry’s Most Flexible Modular UPS System for North American Cloud and Colocation Data Centers

September 08, 2020

UL models of Vertiv™ Liebert® Trinergy™ Cube can be scaled up to 1.6 MW and significantly reduces downtime with internal redundancy, distributed batteries, and hot-modular power cores

Columbus, Ohio [September 8, 2020] – Vertiv (NYSE: VRT), a global provider of critical digital infrastructure and continuity solutions, today raised the bar for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) capacity, efficiency and flexibility in the U.S. and Canada.

The UL-listed Vertiv™ Liebert® Trinergy™ Cube UPS is scalable in 400 kW increments to 1.6 MW, with optional separate, isolated battery systems for each power core and internal redundancy to ensure fault tolerance and uninterrupted power during maintenance. Available outside North America since 2014, the Liebert Trinergy Cube has more than one million kilowatts of power installed worldwide.

The Liebert Trinergy Cube enables enterprises modernizing their data centers and growing colocation and cloud providers to reduce capital and operating expenses while enhancing availability, flexibility and sustainability. By integrating multiple power cores within the system, the Liebert Trinergy Cube minimizes the complexity of traditional multi-module system designs while supporting scalable, high-availability 2N or reserve architectures with advanced features such as short circuit protection, support for distributed or centralized lithium ion batteries, hot modularity and circular reduncancy. The design of the system enables batteries to scale with the power cores for true incremental growth and allows unneeded cores to be idled during periods of low demand for maximum utilization.

The system’s modular design is hot-scalable and allows data centers to add capacity as needed while maximizing available floor space and reducing capital expenses and total cost of ownership (TCO). The modular design is also hot-serviceable, allowing data centers to service a core while the remaining cores continue to power the load. It is compatible with distributed and centralized lithium-ion battery systems, further adding to space savings and lowering TCO through extended battery life and reduced maintenance.

“Efficient capacity management is critical to the success of today’s data centers and is especially important to cloud and colocation providers as they plan to economically grow with their customers,” said Peter Panfil, vice president of Global Power for Vertiv. “The Liebert® Trinergy™ Cube has been at the forefront of intelligent, modular power protection around the world for many years, and now the technology adds an unprecedented combination of large-scale efficiency and flexibility to our portfolio in North America.”

With traditional centralized battery systems with a shared bus, higher capacities can create issues with fault current. The Liebert Trinergy Cube eliminates those issues by isolating faults within a specific core or battery system and shifting the load to the online modules. The same principle enables installation or maintenance of a core without disruption of the load.

The Liebert Trinergy Cube is scalable up to an industry-best 12.8 MW through three-dimensional modularity. Vertically, the stacked drawers in each core can be individually extracted for service while the UPS continues to protect the load. Horizontally, the system can be scaled up to 1.6 MW by adding up to four individual 400 kW cores (and optionally a fifth core for 400 kW of redundancy). And orthogonally, up to eight fully-loaded, 1.6 MW Liebert Trinergy Cubes can operate in parallel to support a 12.8 MW load.

Additionally, the system’s architecture and multiple connection options allow the Liebert Trinergy Cube to be configured in a wide range of layouts – including straight row, L-shaped and back-to-back – to flexibly adapt to available floor space. The Liebert® Trinergy™ Cube offers seismically compliant models, ensuring reliable power protection in any geographical location.

The Liebert Trinergy Cube is available with Vertiv™ LIFE™ Services Remote Diagnostic and Preventive Monitoring and Preventive Maintenance services. These capabilities provide real-time analytics, allowing the services team to recommend actions to maintain the best operational performance and enable pre-emptive and immediate issue resolution to reduce downtime.
