Reliable Power Protection for Critical IT Applications

Today’s IT managers need a data system infrastructure that is reliable, flexible, secure and operationally economical. For instance, when designing server rooms, they require uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems that deliver complete power protection for critical IT applications. These components must also be able to accommodate growth and expansion while maintaining cost-effective performance.

A server room is used to house computer servers and their associated networking, power and cooling components. Depending on the needs, this room can contain anywhere from 10 up to hundreds of servers. This equipment is generally installed into rack enclosures to keep it organized and secure. These servers usually include basic CPU components without a display or input device and can be centrally accessed and managed from a location usually found outside the server room. The server room infrastructure is designed to provide a continuous and reliable supply of electrical power.

Different types of UPS systems can be found protecting server rooms. In some cases, larger freestanding UPS systems can provide power to many racks, while in other cases rackmount UPS systems can be found providing power to components in one or two racks. In most cases server room UPS systems will be of the online double conversion type, although line-interactive UPS can also be used in certain rackmount applications. As computing requirements grow, so will a server room's power requirements.

Some server rooms will also have dual redundant power supplies to achieve the highest levels of reliability and availability. Under this type of design, each load receives power from two independent power sources, either of which is capable of supporting the entire system in the event of a single power failure.

Another class of server room is the Edge computing type, which is based on a small quantity of racks (typically less than five) and used in distributed scenarios.
